Can PlayBook OS 2.0 save the platform?

Add caption The PlayBook OS 2.0 is now currently available for download. Just "check for updates" on your BlackBerry PlayBook. RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook tablet hasn't been getting any respect, but this may soon change once BlackBerry OS 2.0 is made available. The once promising yet much maligned slate has been ridiculed for lacking BBM (BlackBerry Messenger), native email and calendar applications. It has been heavily discounted, dangled in front of developers as bait, and 400 of them were recently given away by Ellen DeGeneres as party favours for her live audience. The long awaited software update does bring a slew of improvements to the PlayBook and introduces some features that should have been present a year ago when the device first launched. PlayBook owners will finally get a native e-mail application, a Personal Information Manager app as well as a contacts app. These are business critical apps for RIM's core users and a

What a Windows 7 User Needs to Know About Windows 8

With Windows 8 hovering on the not-so-distant horizon, there’s been plenty of curiosity about Microsoft’s newest operating system. After previewing an early version of Windows 8, we’ve now had a chance to use Microsoft’s Consumer Preview and have a few initial impressions to share. The new operating system represents a fairly radical change if you’ve been using Windows all along, though many of the most striking changes are only skin deep. How does it stack up? The big question for most folks considering an upgrade when Windows 8 hits the market is, “How does it compare to the version of Windows I’m used to using for day-to-day functionality?” That question is best answered in two ways. Right out of the box, it looks confusing and abstract, since the familiar Start button and icons are gone, replaced by tiles and a side-to-side scroll bar. The “Metro” interface is Microsoft’s new standard, since it’s going to be shared across all of its major consumer platforms — Windows Phone

Nokia is still the king of mobile phones in India

Driven by strong uptake of smartphones, mobile phone shipments to India grew by 10 percent to 183.4 million units in 2011 against 166.5 million units in 2010, says a study. According to a CyberMedia Research study, the smartphone segment grew 87 percent to 11.2 million units in 2011 as against 6 million units in the previous year. On the other hand, feature phone shipments increased seven percent to 172.2 million units in 2011 from 160.5 million units in 2010. Nokia retained its leadership position with 31 percent share of the overall mobile phone segment, followed by Samsung at No 2 with 15 per cent and Micromax at No 3 with 5 per cent share in terms of sales (unit shipments) during 2011. The Finnish firm was also numero uno in the smartphones segment with a 38 per cent share, followed by Samsung with 28 per cent share in 2011. RIM dropped to third place with a 15 per cent share, the study said. In 2011, the India smartphones market witnessed the launch of 150 models by over 3

New Ipad 3 Review

Apple has another solid hit with the "New iPad" Apple's "New iPad" was announced last week to much fanfare in San Francisco. As is usually the case with new iPad or iPhone releases, launch day pre-orders sold out quickly and those who were late to get their orders in could end up waiting for a few weeks to get their hands on one. As a refresher, an Apple A5X processor that has seen its onboard RAM double from 512MB to 1GB powers the new iPad. The A5X is also blessed with a quad-core GPU which boosts gaming performance and helps feed the new iPad's biggest new feature: a 2048 x 1536 resolution Retina display. Other niceties include a 5MP rear-facing camera, and optional LTE connectivity. On the negative side, the weight and thickness of the iPad has grown to accommodate a new 42.5 watt-hour battery (the iPad 2 had a 25 watt-hour battery). In addition, Apple is once again being stingy with storage capacities on the iPad. Even tho

Angry Birds Space: First Look, First Impressions

Just last week, the Samsung Mobile Youtube channel posted the first true gameplay video of Angry Birds Space, the highly anticipated sequel to the smash hit (pun alert!) mobile game Angry Birds.   If we are to just take whatever the video has shown, nothing much has changed in terms of objectives: You still have to fling a bird out of a slingshot and cause as much wanton destruction on those pesky green pigs. But it seems that Finnish developer Rovio has pushed the gameplay even further by adding a few more obstacles, physics, and mechanics that will provide a new challenge even for seasoned players, who pretty much have three-star marks in their playthroughs of the series' previous games. The level featured, which was set to be a Samsung Galaxy exclusive, showed much of the game's restructured dynamics that added more to the previous' simple, yet enormously addictive, smash-'em-up gameplay. As we all know, the setting is in outer space, so the

Google+users spend just 3.3 minutes a month

Is Google+ on the way to becoming Orkut? The answer might be a resounding ‘Yes’ if the recent report from comScore is to be believed. According to comScore, Google+’s U.S. users spent just 3.3 minutes/month on the site on an average, in January, down from the previous month’s stats and just a fraction of the time Facebook users spend on the site. The average amount of time spent on Google’s social network declined from 4.8 per minutes in December and 5.1 minutes in November. Facebook users, on the other hand, spent about 7 1/2 hours on the site in January, up from about seven in December, the report points out. Google unveiled the social-networking site in June last year. The site created a huge buzz during its launch, but has failed to keep up it up. Though new users continue to join the Google+, not many are found actively using the site like  Facebook. According to the report, Pinterest and Tumblr are Facebook’s nearest rivals, each accounting for 89 minutes
